Owensboro Sister Cities and Regions

Last fall, the Owensboro Sister Cities program hosted a high school exchange with students from Hejčín Gymnázium (high school) in Olomouc, Czech Republic.  We are now planning on making the reciprocal part of the exchange—our Owensboro students travelling to the Czech Republic for two weeks to visit and learn.

Who is eligible?
Any person who will be a sophomore/ junior/ senior at AHS/ DCHS/ OCHS/ OHS during the 2009-2010 school year is eligible.  The student must be in good standing at his/her school, and be eligible to travel to the Czech Republic (America citizens need only a passport, which can take 1-2 months).

What program/ activities are planned?
The Olomouc Sister Cities program is arranging the daily schedule—the students will have activities planned for them around the city of Olomouc, as well as some smaller trips in the region.  Students will attend some classes (in English) at Hejčin Gymnazium, and be expected to present information on Owensboro & life in the USA.  At the end of the trip, the group will spend a day and a half in the capital city Prague, a gem of Europe, before flying back to Kentucky.

What about transportation?
Most of the time, students will use the well-developed public transport system.  Buses, train, and of course our own feet, will be used.  All the students will stay with families who have a student at Hejčin Gymnazium, and so the group will meet up at the school.

When is the trip, and what are the other timelines?
The trip is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 15- 30th.  This includes students’ fall breaks, as well as another week of classes.  It is imperative for the students who participate on the exchange that they communicate with their teachers in advance to get expected class work.  There will be some time in the evenings for study (in particular as the hosting students will also have a lot of school work).

What is the cost, and what does it cover?
The price of the trip is $1300.  This covers the flight (form Nashville, TN), lodging with a host family, a 2-night stay in historic Prague, and most meals (some lunches will be at students’ expense).  It does not cover spending money, nor passport.  Please note: if selected, applicant must pay $200 with application, $500 by July 1st, and another $600 by Sept. 1st.

Who will be in charge, and chaperoning the students?
There are a number of local people who are working with the exchange, including the Olomouc teacher who came to Owensboro last fall.  During the day, the students will have an Owensboro chaperone accompany the group at all times.  In the evenings, the student will be with his/her host family, and expected to follow the host family’s rules.

What is the application procedure?
All application materials (application sheet, essay, and two recommendations) can be picked up from the same person who gave you this information.  Applications must be sent to Mr. Bill West, Executive Director, Owensboro Sister Cities and Regions, P. O. Box 1331, Owensboro, KY 42303-1331.
